Renesas develops 40nm flash hybrid MCU for electric vehicle motor control applications

Renesas Electronics has developed the RH850/C1x series of MCUs for motor control applications for hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles (HEV/EV) manufactured in the 40nm flash memory technology. There are "RH850/C1H" aimed at dual motors and "RH850/C1M" aimed at single motors.

While using the 40nm microfabrication technology, the new product also integrates a flash memory using the MONOS (Metal-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon) structure, which is also the focus of Renesas MCUs for differentiation. As a result, the new product achieves low power consumption while achieving high-speed reading performance. The H850/C1H is equipped with 4MB flash memory and the RH850/C1M is equipped with 2MB flash memory. In addition, for data storage applications, 32KB of flash memory with the same basic functions as EEPROM is built in.

In addition to these flash memory and lockable-running CPU cores (Renesas RH850G3M), it also provides a wide range of peripheral circuits (functions) for electric vehicle motor control applications. For example, in cooperation with Tamagawa Seiki, the R/D converter circuit (RDC2) was implemented using the technology of the company's R/D converter IC, the new product "AU6805." In addition, the motor control IP core "EMU2: Enhanced Motor Control Unit 2" developed by Renesas and the timer for motor control "TSG3: Timer S Generation 3" are integrated.

With these peripheral circuits, the MCU product can perform motor control in three ways (sine-wave PWM, overmodulation, square wave) with built-in firmware. Switching between these three modes according to the conditions allows for more efficient control and therefore enables faster, higher-performance motor control without software load. In addition, the RH850/C1H aimed at dual motors is also equipped with a high-performance CPU core (Renesas Electronics' RH850G3M) that can run programs other than the above-mentioned lock-lockable CPUs.

The new product is equipped with a large number of security mechanisms in order to meet the functional safety standard (ISO26262). For example, as mentioned earlier, the main CPU core can lockstep. In addition, ECC (Error Check And Correct) functions are also provided for memories such as flash memory. The R/D converter (RDC2) also has a diagnostic function.

The new product will begin mass production in May 2016 and is expected to produce 100,000 units per month. The sample price of new products is 12,000 yen for RH850/C1H and 10,000 yen for RH850/C1M. The new product can be used in combination with the RH850 Series power management IC "RAA270000KFT" which is currently sampling. The power management IC integrates all the power required for the MCU operation, two external sensor power trackers, and a variety of status monitoring and circuit diagnostic functions. By combining with the MCU, the power supply design burden on the user can be reduced.

In addition, Renesas plans to introduce an inverter for driving electric motors for electric vehicles using this new product at the internal exhibition "Renesas DevCon Japan 2014" held on September 2, 2014 in Minato-ku, Tokyo. (Reporter: Yutaro Kojima, Nikkei Electronics)
