Pantothenic acid is present in living cells as a component of coenzyme A (COA) and is a coenzyme for acetylation. Various carboxylic acids in the body combine with the -SH group in the COA molecule by acetylation to form unstable compounds with high-energy thioester bonds to enhance their biochemical activity, and then further participate in the metabolism of substances in the body. When pantothenic acid is deficient, it will affect the synthesis of COA, resulting in a variety of disorders in the metabolic process.
