The editors of Stone World magazine in the United States spent several weeks getting data on US stone imports from the US Department of Commerce. To his surprise, the situation is not as bad as people think.
In fact, in 2008, the United States imported a total of 2.262 billion US dollars of granite, marble, slate and other materials. Compared with the $2.761 billion in 2007, it fell 18.06%.
Objectively speaking, the trend in the first half of 2008 is better than that in the second half of the year, so the simple impression from one year cannot fully explain the difficulties faced by stone imports. In addition, we also know that the stone import situation will be very bad in the first few months of 2009, but our stone industry has not completely collapsed.
Compared with the previous data, the total amount of US stone imports in 2008 was less than the 2.315 billion in 2005. The data below details the changes in the import of various stone materials.
Granite imports fell from 1.47 billion in 2007 to 1.14 billion in 2008, a drop of 20.7%. The most important importers of granite in the United States are as follows: Brazil’s exports fell from $555.1 million to $422.5 million, Italy fell from $268.6 million to $233.1 million, and China fell from $298.1 million. To $267.5 million, India has dropped from $244.1 million to $169.9 million.
US marble imports (including limestone, travertine and other calcareous stone) fell from $1.126 billion in 2007 to $950.8 million in 2008, a drop of 15.6%. The major US importers of marble are as follows: Turkish marble exports fell from $415.9 million to $317.1 million, Italy fell from $178.6 million to $163.9 million, and Mexico fell from $128.5 million to US$91.1 million, China fell from 166.9 million to $12.5 million.
