According to a military and aerospace electronics website reported on March 1, 2013, the US Navy’s military renewable energy experts are testing an on-board renewable fuel cell system that can save money and the labor force of the soldiers. The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division is evaluating a system of fuel cells and arrays of solar panels that can be pulled by ground vehicles to produce 5 kilowatts of electricity.
A fuel cell is a power generation device that uses hydrogen as a fuel to generate electrical energy through an electrochemical reaction. The only by-products of this process are water and heat. Hydrogen and oxygen are produced by electrolyzing water. The system stores hydrogen for refueling the fuel cell. An electronic engineer at the Naval Air Warfare Weapons Department’s Renewable Energy Office commented that the fuel cell is not a new concept, but this system is the only self-powered system that only requires water and sunlight. It is completely environmentally friendly and all fuel cell components can be recycled. Used, the system uses water from the supplemental fuel itself.
Users of renewable energy systems pour water and arrange solar arrays in the sun, generating electricity through solar panels, and currents producing hydrogen and oxygen in water. Oxygen is vented to the atmosphere and hydrogen is stored. During the day, the command center and other military energy users will use solar power, and additional solar energy will generate hydrogen. At night, the stored hydrogen is sent to the fuel cell to generate electricity. The China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station is a great place to test solar energy. The site is located in the high Mojave Desert, where there is very little cloudy weather. The only by-product of this system is water, which can be stored in a bucket for the next day. In this process, diesel, batteries, and toxic gases that are discharged into the air are not required. The renewable energy team puts forward the system requirements and coordinates with the production hardware contractor. Before sending the renewable energy system to the troops for on-site testing, the team will test and evaluate the system at the China Lake Laboratory. Since the system only requires water for operation, its greatest benefit is to reduce the logistics requirements associated with fuel escort, which will greatly save labor.
