Kuwait: Four nuclear power plants will be built to replace oil

As OPEC’s fifth-largest oil producer, Kuwait plans to build four nuclear power reactors by 2022 and join the Gulf countries in the development of atomic energy to seek alternative sources of electricity.

According to local media reports, the Kuwait National Nuclear Energy Commission is considering the location of the nuclear power plant and will announce its nuclear energy development roadmap as early as next February. Kuwait may build four 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactors.

Kuwait is discussing with international agencies how nuclear energy will adapt to Kuwait’s energy mix over the next 20 years. Preliminary analysis shows that nuclear power is feasible as long as oil prices are above US$45 to US$50 a barrel.

The Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, and the United Arab Emirates, have begun to develop nuclear energy and save oil reserves for sale overseas. They must eliminate the worries of the United States, that is, fear that in this area where three regional wars have broken out since the 1980s, nuclear technology will shift to production.

It is reported that Kuwait has approved an agreement to the International Atomic Energy Commission to evaluate future nuclear facilities in order to alleviate the concerns of the United States.
