The research team led by Harada Harada of the University of Osaka, Japan, made this new material using cyclodextrin and ferrocene. Cyclodextrins look like a reduced keyhole, and ferrocene is the equivalent of a key that can just be inserted in. In a chemical reaction, the two can be combined together in seconds to form a gel-like substance.

The researchers cut the gelatinous material with a knife and put it together. Within hours to 24 hours, the extracted key was inserted into the keyhole again. The two gels were rejoined together.
