On July 18, 2011, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) announced a new research result. The research team found that solar photovoltaic modules can provide significant cooling effects for buildings.
The research team led by Jan Kleissl, a professor of environmental engineering at the UCSD School, used thermal imaging technology to find that the roof of a building equipped with photovoltaic modules was 2.8 degrees Celsius lower than the roof that was exposed. The research results will be published in the forthcoming "Solar Energy" magazine.
"In addition, many ways, such as reflecting the roof membrane, can effectively reduce the temperature," Professor Kleissl said. "But if you consider installing a photovoltaic cell, it depends on the thermal properties of the roof, which can save a lot of energy.
The research team also found that photovoltaic components can retain heat at night, thereby reducing winter heating costs.
