ICFO has developed an almost transparent flexible organic solar cell

Researchers at the Non-profit Photonics Science Research Institute (ICFO) have created a new type of organic solar cell designed to maintain high efficiency while also taking care of flexibility, thinness, and almost complete transparency. When put together, it is absolutely the first choice for building integrated photovoltaic power generation projects. Organic solar cells (OPVs), also known as plastic solar cells, are a type of cell that uses organic conductive polymers to collect solar energy.

The design of new translucent plastic solar cells may be an important step for building integrated photovoltaic power generation. Although their efficiency and cost per watt are not comparable to standard silicon batteries, it has its own unique place - lighter, more flexible, and more suitable for indirect absorption of sunlight.

When organic solar cells (OPVs) achieve maximum efficiency, they are opaque, but scientists can also choose to sacrifice efficiency to achieve translucency (by diluting metal electrodes to only a few nanometers).

Now, researchers at ICFO have announced that they can create an organic solar cell that is almost indistinguishable from ordinary glass, but the efficiency is close to that of an opaque organic cell - by integrating light crystals inside the panel to enhance its infra-red and The absorption of ultraviolet light - 5.6% of the efficiency is almost half of such solar cells.

ICFO said that such solar cells are particularly suitable for photovoltaic integrated buildings and there are not many restrictions. In addition to being almost transparent, it can also be applied to surfaces, and the color can also be adjusted by changing the configuration of the photonic crystal.

Researchers are currently working to improve their performance, longevity, and stability. The leader of the study (professor Jordi Martorell) stated, "We expect to achieve extremely high efficiency and transparency in the medium term to cater for the needs of devices such as monitors, tablets and smartphones."

Research papers are published in the journal Nature Photonics.
