Fraunhofer Institute successfully manufactures organic solar cells on flexible glass

Trial products.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (Fraunhofer IAP) has successfully produced organic thin film solar cells (OPVs) on flexible glass. The purpose is to use flexible glass to eliminate the problem of low OPV durability. Of course, the simple manufacturing process is also one of the advantages of using flexible glass.

Fraunhofer IAP uses a 100 μm thick glass produced by Corning. This glass is not only very thin and bendable, but also withstands a process temperature of 400°C.

The original trial was made using the S2S method. But Fraunhofer IAP's goal is to make it in roll-to-roll (R2R), and now it has begun to develop related technologies. (Reporter: Nozawa Tetsuru, Nikkei Electronics)
