According to a new paper, researchers have created a wall-mounted wireless charging system that can wirelessly charge multiple devices in the room through a device similar to an LCD panel. In the current garage, living room and home environment, electrical appliances often need to be very close to the power supply. But this new research has extended the distance of wireless transmission to 10 meters (33 feet) and can wirelessly power multiple devices at the same time.
The existing wireless charging technology mostly adopts the principle of electromagnetic induction. There is a coil inside the charging panel, which generates a powerful magnetic field through electromagnetic conversion. Then the nearby receiving coil turns the magnetic energy back into electrical energy.
At present, this kind of technology has been applied to some mobile phones, electric toothbrushes, and electric vehicles. However, the problem is that the magnetic field strength will rapidly decrease with the increase of distance. Therefore, in practical applications, the two are still close to or very close to each other. .
One of the authors of the paper, Prof. David Smith of Duke University, said: "Our system can automatically and continuously charge any device in the room and make the battery a thing of the past."
The system uses a higher microwave frequency and emits energy through a wall-mounted LCD-like device. The material for this tablet is ready-made and has already been tested at Toyota Motor.
In this example, each unit of the tablet (wireless power supply module) can adjust the electromagnetic energy according to requirements, and concentrate the energy source of the size of the television screen on a small device in the room, such as a smart machine.
In addition to supporting distances as far as 10 meters – twice as many as the KAIST system and one meter more than the phased array technology Cota system (though the latter is too expensive and expensive for home use) – This system can also power multiple devices at the same time.
Of course, this system also has its own limitations. The electromagnetic energy source behind the panel needs to be balanced in terms of power consumption, cost, and efficiency. The material must also be optimized for “best focal length†so as to avoid “ghost signal†in the sub-band.
Finally, even if the electromagnetic energy of this system is not harmful to the human body, the user still has to manually turn off the panel and the device when not in use, but the team said that this problem will not become a technical obstacle.
