The development and development of POM in China began in 1959 and was developed at the same time as DuPont and Ticona. In the early 1960s, China's research work on homopolyformaldehyde was suspended. Since then, the production and research of domestic polyformaldehyde has mainly been copolymerized with formaldehyde. In 1965, the Shanghai Solvent Factory began trial production of acetal copolymer.
Hu Qizhong, deputy chief engineer of Shanghai Solvent Factory, said that from the 1980s to the 1990s, POM was among the top five engineering plastics, and it was most promising to build large-scale devices with state-owned technology. Some domestic technology development efforts are indeed quite close to the implementation of industrialization.
However, the fluctuations in methanol prices around 1994 have had a big impact on this process – the rise in oil prices has led to soaring methanol prices, and some domestic companies have struggled to withstand higher costs and are unsustainable.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Ministry of Chemical Industry turned its attention to the introduction. Foreign companies were originally prohibited from entering Chinese investment and allowed to enter into joint ventures with domestic companies. DuPont heard the news and talked with the solvent factory. DuPont achieved the best level in the world in the development of homopolyformaldehyde, but the focus of the solvent plant at that time was not homo-formaldehyde but acetal copolymerization. As a result, the solvent plant disclosed DuPont’s intention to cooperate with itself to DuPont’s competitor, Celanese. The Celanese company, who was informed of the news, immediately flew to China to talk with the solvent factory to produce acetal copolymer.
However, the negotiations did not succeed at the end. “The main reason for the lack of success in the negotiations was that the Ministry of Chemicals wanted the joint venture between Celanese and the Shijingou joint chemical plant of Jilin Chemical Co., Ltd. However, the situation of the Shijingou joint chemical plant was unsatisfactory to the foreign party. The joint venture has not come out."
After the joint venture was hopeless, a minister of the Ministry of Chemical Industry once said to the technicians of the solvent plant: "The development of polyoxymethylene depends on you."
It is a pity that the development of the solvent plant has been bumpy since then. Among them, in addition to the reasons why state-owned enterprises do not attach importance to research and development, cooperation with foreign companies does not delay time again. Both the second and third negotiations have failed. In the past 10 years, negotiations between different foreign parties and domestic companies have not been successful.
Since 2000, with the preparation of a new round of planning, many units in China have been looking for introduction opportunities. In addition to Japan’s Asahi Kasei’s stated willingness to transfer technology, and BaSF’s intention to move in the Yangtze, other foreign acetalization technology owners are inclined to set up their own positions because they can set up factories in China. Nantong project. Whether or not Asahi Kasei is willing to talk now is still a problem. Therefore, opportunities to introduce advanced POM technology from abroad are becoming scarcer.
At the same time, foreign companies have long sold POM at low prices in China, resulting in China's POM market price at the bottom of a basin. The price per ton is about US$1,000 lower than that of the US, Japan and Europe, causing serious impact on domestic enterprises.
This strategy made it impossible for domestic enterprises to compete with foreign POM. At the time, many companies basically did not understand anti-dumping, and there was no ordinary channel for smooth anti-dumping. Anti-dumping seems to be useless. Enterprises are small and scattered, and technology is backward. Before you grow up, foreign goods have been overwhelming.
To this end, China's POM market is unimaginable by outsiders: because the price is lower than the international market, although the domestic market is almost entirely imported, there are hundreds of tons of exports each year. The low price makes the domestic enterprise new project evaluation data very poor and difficult to pass the project, and only after the domestic enterprises have a certain output, it is possible to confront with anti-dumping actions. Now, foreign-owned enterprises will make this possibility very embarrassing.
This time, the cooperation between Baoli and Mitsubishi has made the industry more worried. Baoli is the largest supplier of POM in China, and Mitsubishi is in second place. It was originally fiercely competitive with each other. After the two companies unite, China's POM market will have a monopoly trend.
With the rapid development of China's automobile, electronics and machinery manufacturing industry, the demand for POM has increased significantly. POM has become a strategic product in China, and it is very urgent to develop its own POM industry. "It is foreseeable that the price of domestic POM will definitely rise again in the future." Hu Qizhong said.
Hu Qizhong said that under the current circumstances, China can improve the original technology and equipment, try to introduce advanced foreign technology, and make the domestic POM localization form a certain scale as soon as possible, so that the national economic security is not challenged. .
