Research finds that the "magenta roof" greenhouse can take into account electricity generation, water conservation and plant growth

It is reported that the world consumes 18 million kWh of electricity each year in greenhouses for growing food, equivalent to 391 times the global automobile carbon emissions. The good news is that researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have developed a new type of greenhouse that can be used to generate electricity while solving this problem. In order to distinguish the traditional Greenhouse, the researchers chose a magenta coating for this new type of solar greenhouse. Practice has shown that it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and water consumption, and can even improve the growth of some plants.

The roof panels of greenhouses have selected “wavelength-selective photovoltaic systems” (WSPVs) embedded in magenta fluorescent dye roofs, which are more cost-effective than traditional solar panels. The dye absorbs light energy at green and blue wavelengths and transfers it to very thin solar panels.

The remaining light waves can help the growth of plants. It is worth mentioning that this technology can also strengthen the red band and help promote the photosynthesis of plants.

The researchers tested WSPV solar panels on more than 20 types of germinating fruits and vegetables and found that 80% of them could grow at a normal rate, and another 20% grew more attractive under magenta-embedded panels.

After measuring further photosynthetic experiments, the researchers found that the amount of water needed by the plants was also reduced by 5% compared to the conventional greenhouse. If this technology is extended to the world, its water-saving effect will be astonishing!
