The German Research Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Energy (ZSW) in Baden-Württemberg in Germany has set a new European record. Stuttgart scientists have increased the efficiency of thin-film solar cells made of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) to 22%.
This new CIGS technology is highly favored by the solar industry and will soon replace the traditional silicon solar cells and occupy a larger market share.
The new battery has a surface area of 0.5 square centimeters, which meets the professional standards for testing batteries and is made using a laboratory sprayer. And in the coming years, the efficiency may reach 25%.
Researchers have been able to refresh this record by taking various methods to optimize the production process. The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany certified this new record. ZSW is now only 0.3 percentage points behind the current world record.
