China's new generation of super safe nuclear fuel materials began to irradiate at the reactor

The China General Nuclear Power Group, headquartered in Shenzhen, announced on the 22nd that the China Guangdong Nuclear Accident Fuel-tolerant Fuel (ATF) candidate material officially entered the research reactor for neutron irradiation test on the 21st, which is China's accident-tolerant fuel research and development The milestone events marked the beginning of a new phase of the ATF national science and technology major project led by China Guangdong Nuclear Power.

On the 21st, with the opening of the China Mianyang Research Reactor (CMRR) for the last time this year, CGNPC's ATF candidate materials formally began researching reactor neutron irradiation tests. This incoming stack irradiation is a key step in the development of accident-tolerant fuels. It will optimize accidental fault-tolerant fuel cladding and pellet candidate materials through neutron irradiation, and acquire a large amount of valuable in-reactor performance data for subsequent development and storage. Security reviews provide strong support.

The ATF is the current vane of international nuclear fuel technology research and development. It is a major change in the development of nuclear energy since 60 years ago. It is also a core area where nuclear giants in the United States, Japan, Europe and other countries and regions compete for each other. Since the concept was put forward in 2012, ATF's R&D has developed rapidly over the past five years, and it has evolved from the spark of the star to the plight of the prairie fire.

China's ATF research and development started in 2015. China National General Nuclear Power took the lead in the national key science and technology project “Accidents and fault-tolerant fuel key technologies research”, and cooperated with Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Institute of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and other research institutes, universities and enterprises. , ATF technology research and development national team. At present, the conceptual design and preliminary analysis and evaluation of ATF fuel have been completed, and S2FTM (Super Safe Fuel) series super safety fuels are being researched and developed.

According to the plan, China Guangdong Nuclear Power will replace the nuclear fuel materials under the existing system step by step, and adopt the new type of shell and the new type of core blocks to form S2FTM series fuel assemblies. This new type of super safe fuel can withstand serious nuclear accidents in a relatively long period of time, prolong the non-intervention time of reactor accident conditions, greatly reduce the risk of eliminating hydrogen explosion, and significantly ease the consequences of the loss of cooling water accidents, combined with passive The system realizes the ultimate safety of light water reactors, which can be used not only for fuel replacement of existing units, but also for the design of fourth-generation and more advanced nuclear energy systems. In addition, the new fuel can also maintain or improve operating performance under normal conditions.
