According to the latest statistics released by Clarkson on January 9, the total number of new ships in the world in 2018 totaled 1,195 ships and 28.92 million CGTs, an increase of 5.2% compared with 2017. Among them, South Korean shipping companies received a total of 251 ships and 12.36 million CGTs, accounting for 42.7% of the total, ranking the first in the world. Since 2012, South Korea has ranked second in terms of shipbuilding orders for six consecutive years, ranking behind China. In addition, in 2018, Korean shipping companies have received more than 10 million CGT for the first time since 2015. In contrast, Chinese shipbuilding companies received only 463 ships and 9.31 million CGTs in 2018, accounting for 32.2%, ranking second in the world. Japanese shipbuilding companies ranked third in the world in terms of orders received in 2018, with a total of 179 ships and 3.69 million CGTs, accounting for 12.8%.
According to Clarkson's data, as of the end of 2018, China's hand-held orders still ranked first in the world, totaling 29.1 million CGT. However, in the context of the apparent increase in the number of orders received by Korean ship companies and the decline in the number of orders received by Chinese ship companies, the gap between the orders held by China and South Korea is shrinking sharply.
