High-end, lightweight, high-performance CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) materials are gaining popularity in the aerospace industry. The problem is that this material is prone to material delamination during processing, especially in drilling. Kennametal is known as the new SPF drill bit. This new SPF drill can achieve better hole quality in the range of tool life (at least twice the PCD bit) and can reduce the cost of machining each hole by at least 50%.
For the application of CFRP composites, it currently accounts for 6 to 7% by weight in the aircraft, and is expected to reach 40 to 50% by weight in future aircraft.
When we process multi-layer carbon fiber composites with expensive PCD drills, the material is easily delaminated due to the large cutting force, and the tool life is reduced, resulting in low productivity.
Kennametal's new SPF drill bit base material is made of cemented carbide. Optimized tool geometry and coatings extend tool life and significantly reduce cutting forces, reducing delamination (if stratification is not completely eliminated).
The smooth CVD multilayer diamond coating gives the SPF drill tool a good wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction, which extends tool life and improves chip flow. Special drill tip grinding technology improves tool centering accuracy and reduces axial forces, ensuring hole machining quality.
Kena Metal's hole processing product manager Marcelo Campos said: "In the cutting test, Kennametal SPF drills can process 300 holes in the processing of extremely difficult CFRP materials, and can process 1000 when processing other types of CFRP materials. Holes without delamination."
The new SPF drills are available in 24 different standard diameters from 3.20mm (0.1719") to 6.50mm (0.5010"). The length of the tool is 3 times the standard and 5 times the tool diameter.
But Campos said: "We can also provide solutions according to customer requirements, we can produce tools such as 7 times the length of the tool according to the user's needs."

Non-tapping screws are machine Screw, the pieceworker to be fastened must be tapped with taps in the screw hole in advance to match the screw threads.
The difference between tooth screws and other screws depends on whether they can be used together with nuts. Tooth screws can be used with nuts. And relative to the screws of other teeth, there are self-tapping screws. The nut of this kind of screw has no bow teeth. As for the standard teeth and fine teeth are only different pitch, it is the nut of the machine screw
