Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia have made major breakthroughs in the efficiency of quantum dot solar cells, setting a new world record.
On February 18, a team led by Professor Lianzhou Wang of the University of Queensland in Australia developed a new quantum dot solar cell with an energy conversion efficiency of 16.6%, which is nearly 25% higher than the previous world record. The research team controlled the surface functional chemicals on the quantum dots, thereby developing a new surface engineering method that not only stabilizes the quantum dots, but also maintains a smooth path for electrons to pass through. Because these quantum dots are flexible and can be printed on a large scale at a low cost, they can be stacked as transparent skin on airplanes, cars, and houses to generate electricity.
