A major breakthrough in the field of photonics technology, comparable to silicon-based computer hardware

According to a recent report by the physicist organization network, a research team of the Japan Telephone and Telegraph Company (NTT) wrote in the latest issue of "Natural Photonics" that they have developed a light-based computer hardware whose performance is comparable to that of silicon-based The device is comparable.

Computer scientists have always understood that the era of improving the speed of computers by modifying the parts of silicon-based computers is coming to an end. For this reason, many people have set their sights on quantum computing, hoping to obtain faster calculation speeds; Others are also trying Other ways, such as using light instead of electrons to move data inside the computer.

Currently, light is usually only used to transmit data over long distances. But in the new study, the researchers reported that they have developed some light-based computing devices that perform comparable to electronic-based hardware.

There is still a long way to go to realize that only light is used as data medium in computer hardware to transmit data. At present, engineers are trying to use light in feasible areas; and use electronics in other places. Since computer equipment must be able to convert between two data media, optical and electronic, such equipment has always been "difficult to produce."

Previously, scientists have also developed some related devices, but these devices consume too much power, and the conversion process between photoelectricity is too slow. To address these two issues, researchers have developed a new type of photonic crystal that enables light to follow a specified path as needed and be absorbed when it is needed to generate current. This photonic crystal can also work in reverse.

The researchers said that they used this photonic crystal to make electrical-to-optical devices and optical-to-electrical devices. Then, they used these devices to create an electro-optic modulator with a speed of 40Gbps (consumption of only 4.2 joules per bit) and an optical receiver with a speed of 10Gbps, and combined these two devices to make A transistor. This research shows that it is possible to manufacture hybrid electro-optic devices that can compete with silicon-based devices and soon surpass them. (Reporter Liu Xia)
